Shiite Muslims across the world especially in Iraq attend Muharram mourning ceremonies to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in the year 680 A.D.

Iran Press/Middle East: Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, mourning ceremonies for the months of Muharram and Safar will be held outdoors in shrines, streets, parks, schools, and stadiums, in accordance with health protocols and social distancing.

On Aug 24, The Commemoration ceremony of Muharram was held in New York, with mourners from different countries took part in the ceremony.

This year, like previous years, Shia Muslims were able to raise the flag of Aba Abdollah al-Hussein (third Imam of Shia Muslims) for one day by getting permission, and hold a mourning ceremony in the streets.

Mourners from different countries took part in this ceremony. They mourned for Imam Hossein, and the gathering became an opportunity to share the teachings of Imam Hossein with New Yorkers.

Alongside the other Shias in the world, people all across Iran participate in ceremonies to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein and his loyal 72 companions who stood against Tyranny and injustice; a fact that has been a source of inspiration for not just Muslims but for all of humanity, throughout history.

In Iran, this year, special Muharram mourning rituals will be held different from last year, and in accordance with health protocols, in order to prevent the COVID-19 disease.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, people in different cities of Iran, have joined the 'Every house, a Hosseiniyah' campaign and have installed a black flag on their houses.
