World Assembly of Islamic Awakening lauds reopening of the Hagia Sophia

Tehran (IP) - The Secretariat of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening called the reopening of the Hagia Sophia by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a courageous step and the return of Islamic heritage to the Islamic world and a sign of wisdom and confrontation with Western cultural domination and called on all Muslims to support this wise action.

Iran Press/Iran News: In a statement on Sunday, the secretariat of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening said: "The Hagia Sophia was one of the most important cultural heritages of the Islamic world for five centuries, but old British colonialism, which had dealt a severe blow to Muslims in those five centuries to dominate the fate of Muslims turned the place of worship of Muslims into a museum."

The statement added: "The Turkish government, and especially the President of this Islamic country, took a courageous and admirable step in reviving the identity of Islamic site and returned the Islamic heritage to the Islamic world."

Elsewhere the statement said that the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening described the action as a sign of wisdom as well as confronting the cultural domination of the West, reviving the identity of Muslims, and preserving the dignity and cultural heritage.

It also called on all Muslims around the world to support this initiative.

The Turkish Supreme Court convened on Thursday to consider a plan to change the use of the Hagia Sophia Museum, and on Friday overturned a 1934 Cabinet resolution that changed the use of the Hagia Sophia to a museum instead of an old mosque.

Following the ruling, Erdoğan announced that Hagia Sophia should be turned into a mosque, and on July 24, for the first time in 86 years, a prayer service was held in this building.
