  • EU alarms US about striking new tariffs

EU Commission spokesman Daniel Rosario warned the US that European Union will respond immediately if Washington decides to go ahead with new tariffs on EU-origin products.

Iran Press/Europe: Speaking at a daily briefing in Brussels on Tuesday, European Commission spokesman Daniel Rosario said: "The EU is ready to respond immediately if the U.S. decides to go ahead with the new tariffs on EU-origin products.”

In March, American President Donald Trump imposed a 25-percent tariff on imported iron and steel, and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum -- since then the issue has been discussed heatedly among the U.S. and its major trade partners.

After that, the EU placed a 25-percent tariff on American products and Trump threatened to impose more tariffs on all European cars.

In July, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and Trump held a meeting to discuss trade relations between the two sides agreeing, among other things, to avoid any new tariffs while negotiating future arrangements for trans-Atlantic trade.

Last month, Trump hosted European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Washington.

Trade relations between the two sides soured in June, after Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from the European Union, Canada and Mexico. The European Union retaliated by levying its own tariffs on over $3.2 billion worth of the US imports, saying that the US tariffs targeted over $7.4 billion worth of the EU exports.

Trump accused the EU and China of manipulating their foreign exchange rates to obtain trade benefits and said a strong dollar and rising Fed interest rates were undermining US competitiveness.
