Shia Maraji urge freedom for Sheikh Zakzaky
Two of Shia Maraji asked the international community to demand freedom of the top Shia cleric and leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky.
Iran Press/ Iran news: Senior Iranian Cleric Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli visited daughters of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in Qom, south of Tehran, saying: "martyrdom of six children, numerous physical injuries and imprisonment are Sheikh Zakzaky's sacrifices for Islam."
Another Shia cleric, Ayatollah Sheikh Mohsen Araki, also said that more efforts should be done by international community for freedom of Sheikh Zakzaky, Iran Press reported.
Sheikh Zakzaky has been held in detention since 2015 in the Zaria massacre, in which 3 of his sons, as well as hundreds of his followers, were killed by the Nigerian Army.
In 2016, Nigeria's federal high court ordered his unconditional release from jail following a trial, but the government has so far refused to set him free.
After much effort and protest and domestic and international pressure, the Nigerian court allowed Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife to travel to India for treatment in August 2019, but due to dissatisfaction with the treatment process, security constraints and the lack of trusted doctors, Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife left for Nigeria after spending two days in India.104/205
