Iran, Turkey, and Russia FMs hold Astana Process talks
Tehran (IP) - The Trilateral Ministerial Meeting of the Guarantor States of the Astana Process (Iran, Turkey, and Russia) was held via teleconference.
Iran Press/Iran News: The Wednesday meeting held to discuss the latest developments in Syria and the region, was attended by Mohammad Javad Zarif, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Sergei Lavrov.
They discussed the latest situation in Idlib, the Syrian Constitutional Committee, and the need to lift unilateral sanctions, especially given the outbreak of coronavirus, and exchanged views on the humanitarian situation in Syria and the return of the Syrian refugees.
The three foreign ministers stressed the need for continued consultations and coordination at the highest level between the Guarantor States of Astana Process as the most important and effective process for resolving the Syrian crisis. The countries also agreed to respect the independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as the political settlement of the Syrian crisis and the separation of terrorists from the opposition to continue the fight against terrorism.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who had previously traveled to Syria to discuss the latest developments and consult with the Syrian President and Foreign Minister, discussed the recent developments in Idlib and the need to expand the government's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the continuation of the fight against terrorism.
Referring to his recent consultations with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Otto Pedersen, Zarif supported his efforts to facilitate the Syrian-Syrian talks within the framework of the Constitutional Committee and to maintain the committee's independence and non-interference in foreign affairs.
US unilateral sanctions, serious obstacle in tackling the virus
Referring to the coronavirus crisis, he said unilateral sanctions were a serious obstacle in tackling the virus and called on the international community and the United Nations to take responsibility for lifting sanctions and alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people and paying special attention to the situation of refugees in the camps.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also called for speeding up the return of Syrian refugees and the international community's attention to providing humanitarian assistance, calling it an important step towards restoring hope and stability to Syrian society.
The Foreign Minister also referred to the Zionist Regime's constant aggression against Syria, which violates the Syrian national sovereignty and threatens the peace and stability of the region.
The foreign ministers of the three countries stressed the need to continue trilateral consultations at all levels, including the holding of the 6th summit of the Astana process in Iran after the normalization of the situation related to the coronavirus.
