Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Ministery spokesman stated that the United States is not a member of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) thus it has no legal standing to invoke UNSCR 2231, as the UN security council members stated.

Iran Press/Iran News: Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh added in his tweet on Friday morning: "13 members of the Security Council, including the head of the council, have stated that the United States due to the fact that it is not a member of the JCPOA, has no legal ground to invoke Resolution 2231.

He stated: The hands of the clock move only in the parallel alternate universe of Pompeo. This happens when a former intelligence officer becomes the leader of the US diplomatic apparatus.

The US State Department announced on Thursday that the return of sanctions on Iran will begin at midnight on September 20 (September 30).

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote in a Twitter message: "Last week, after the failure of the Security Council in its mission to maintain peace and security, the United States announced the 30-day return process of all UN sanctions against Iran."

Pompeo also wrote in another tweet: "If any member of the UN Security Council proposes a resolution to continue easing sanctions on Iran, the United States will oppose it."

"If no resolution is presented, sanctions on Iran will be reinstated on September 20," he said. This is how the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 works.

On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from JCPOA by violating Washington's obligations under this agreement and re-impose anti-Iranian sanctions, and due to US withdrawal, Iran reduces its JCPOA commitments.
