Thousands of protesters have gathered in Jerusalem al Quds on Saturday night, August 22, amid continued demonstrations against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Iran PressMiddle East: Protesters marched from Chords Bridge to Paris Square to reach the Prime Minister's Residence on Balfour Street in Jerusalem al Quds.

However, their progress was blocked by police who briefly clashed with demonstrators who attempted to break through the cordon.

Police had previously denied permission for the march to occur when organizers rejected the police's request that an alternate route be used.

Protests have been reported throughout Israel, particularly in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in recent weeks over the government's handling of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Anger over the issue has been compounded by pre-existing anti-Netanyahu sentiment, with the Prime Minister facing three criminal cases over alleged corruption.
