Assad: Israel responsible for downing of Russian military plane

In a message of condolence to the Russian nation and Russian president Vladimir Putin, president Bashar al-Assad of Syria said the Israeli regime is responsible for the tragic downing of a Russian military aircraft and the killing of 15 military personnel on board the plane.

The Russian military has accused the Israeli Air Force of playing a significant role in causing Syrian air defence forces to shoot down a Russian Il-20 plane, killing 15 Russian military personnel. The air defences were responding to an air raid by Israel on Latakia.

A Russian military Il-20 aircraft with 14 service members on board went off the radar screens during an Israeli airstrike involving four jets on Syria’s Latakia province late on Monday night, according to Russia's Defense Ministry.
